Performance & Technique Playbook
First feel. Then release. Then warm up.
Resonance begins with relaxation. Relaxation begins with awareness. Relaxation isn't low energy — it's the removal of unnecessary tension so the body can make sound, movement and emotion freely.
Before you sing, play or step out
The 60-second body reset
Don't command the body to relax without first feeling where it is tense. Awareness comes before release.
The sequence
Feel → Locate tension → Release → Breathe → Warm up → Resonate → Perform
Pre-performance reset
- Body
- Where am I holding unnecessary tension?
- Breath
- Is it low, steady, and available?
- Voice or hands
- Have I warmed up gradually?
- Mind
- What can I stop overthinking?
- Emotion
- What am I here to communicate?
- Energy
- What level does this performance actually require?
- Intention
- What should the audience feel when I finish?
Technique by discipline
Vocal resonance
- Release tension in the jaw, tongue, throat, neck, and shoulders.
- Begin with gentle humming, lip trills, or comfortable sustained notes.
- Feel vibration in the lips, face, cheekbones, chest, and head — don't manufacture it.
- Increase projection gradually while keeping the throat free.
- Think forward and open, not louder and harder.
- Painful, pinched, hoarse, or strained? Stop and reset.
Project the intention and allow the resonance to carry it.
Hands, arms & instrument
- Shake out the arms and hands before playing.
- Check whether the shoulders are rising unnecessarily.
- Keep the wrists mobile rather than locked.
- Warm up slowly before increasing speed or intensity.
- Pause and reset when tension starts changing the sound or technique.
Use only the pressure the instrument actually requires.
Emotion & stage presence
- Know what the song is saying before deciding how to perform it.
- Choose the emotion or intention the audience should receive.
- Let movement follow the music instead of adding it mechanically.
- Use eye line, stillness, breath, and dynamics intentionally.
Return to the meaning of the song whenever self-consciousness appears.
